Sunday Services

Our diverse Sunday services are an expression of our spiritual, secular and human selves.  Each provides time to learn about our faith and ethical traditions, sing and share our joys and concerns.  Visitors are always welcome!

  • Services begin at 10:30am, last about one hour and are followed by a social time.
  • Our minister, the Reverend Paul Ratzlaff, is responsible for two thirds of the services and the Sunday Program Committee plans one third, often including outside speakers or UUFH members.
  • Sermon topics are listed on the right and in our Calendar.
  • Service themes include:
    • Finding meaning in one’s life
    • Learning from the world’s wisdom teaching
    • Celebrating our interconnectedness
    • Addressing ethical and social issues
    • Honoring our congregation and our UU heritage
    • Inspiring us to act on our faith
  • A mix of seriousness, humor and craft creates a thought-provoking, warm and engaging service that varies week-to-week, while it contains some repeated elements, such as “Lighting the Chalice” and sharing “Joys and Concerns.”
  • Services may celebrate our interconnectedness to each other and our earth, Christmas, Hanukkah, Passover, Easter and other holidays, our choir, Pride Sunday or current events which shape our world.
  • The service consists of readings, hymns, announcements, instrumental and choral music, and a sermon by our minister or a guest speaker.

Our children are a special and important part of our congregational family.  Many Sundays they attend the first 15 minutes of Sunday services with their families and are invited to interact with a story or a personal experience. We then sing the children and their teachers to their Religious Exploration classes.  Each year, we celebrate three “intergenerational services” in which the children celebrate the entire service together with the adults.

Our Music Director, Richard Hyman, leads the music so integral and meaningful to our services with the regular participation of our choir and occasional guest artists.

There's no dress code at our services.  You are as likely to find sweaters and blue jeans as you are a shirt and tie or casual business attire.  We want you to come and feel comfortable.

At the rear of our sanctuary, a glass enclosed Family Room enables parents of infants and toddlers to participate in the service without worrying that their youngsters are disturbing the rest of the congregation. Child care is also provided in our Nursery.

Following the service, there is a social hour where visitors may join us for coffee and snacks.  There is an opportunity to talk with the minister and to meet with our members during this time.

Be sure to stop by the Visitor's Table to get literature on UUFH or Unitarian Universalism, ask questions and sign-up for our newsletter.

CDs OF SERVICES AVAILABLE – NEW PROCEDURES

All Sunday services are recorded. These recordings are available on CDs using MP3 format. Due to the storage size of each disk, the current service plus several recent services will be placed on each CD. CDs are available for loan through the Will Hendrie Memorial Book Stall and can usually be borrowed starting the Sunday after the service that was recorded. Please return CDs as soon as possible after you borrow them so that others may enjoy them.

CDs of Sunday services have replaced audio tapes for lending at the Bookstall and RE for use on your computer.  New disks are being created that play on a regular CD player. They are all labeled AUDIO on the disk.  Only one Sunday service can fit on a disk. Periodically computer-readable disks will be made with multiple services (usually containing all services for the month) for those who can use them.  About a month's worth of services are also available on the UUFH web site, and they can be also downloaded as MP3s.  Older tapes back to 1982 are available on special request.

For those who wish to have their own copy of the service, copies can be made if you supply either a blank CD or a 90-minute cassette tape and a $5.00 donation to the Fellowship to support the sound program.

CDs of service are available to RE teachers through the RE office. RE teachers may ask about this program.
