Religious miracles are events believed to be supernatural acts of God or divine beings, often defying natural laws and considered proof of a higher power’s intervention. These events are documented in sacred texts and traditions, and often involve healings, nature interventions, or restorations … the loaves and fishes, the parting of the Red Sea. But can UUs really believe in miracles? The word alone carries weight. For some, it brings comfort and hope. For others, it might trigger skepticism or questions. But no matter where we fall on that spectrum, miracles show up in the stories we tell about being alive—across centuries and continents, across cultures and creeds. Let’s take a journey together through the world’s religions to see what miracles mean in different traditions—and perhaps discover what they can mean to us today, in our own seeking as UUs.
